Lauren Silverman, the wife of American Idol’s most famous judge, Simon Cowell, recently gave birth to a bouncing baby boy, Eric. Reports suggest that the baby is doing well and that Cowell and his wife are enjoying parenthood. But although Cowell has a massive fortune, their life is not simple marital/parental bliss.
Lauren has an 8-year-old son, Adam, with Andrew Silverman, her ex-husband and Cowell’s former close friend. The Silverman split was apparently highly acrimonious. Reports in the media describe the battle over their child custody arrangement as “impossible.” Lauren and Andrew had been married for 10 years before they split. According to reports, Adam’s parents trade custody. One parent gets him one week, the other parent gets him the next week, etc. They split the holidays. Andrew Silverman was so deeply offended by what he perceived to be his friend’s betrayal that he wants Cowell to play no part in Adam’s life.
Per the arrangement, Cowell cannot see Adam until January of next year or risk a $50,000 penalty if he violates that rule three times. Lauren could also lose custody of her son. Another report says that there’s also a “formal clause banning Lauren from saying anything derogatory about Andrew in front of their son.”
Due to the nature of the arrangement, Cowell can barely spend any time with his own newborn son without violating the agreement.
Cowell reportedly will have to make twice monthly trans-Atlantic trips to see his newborn. Even though, for someone of his means, that’s not much of a financial burden, it certainly is a logistical and emotional one.
