56-year-old comedian, talk show host and Oscar host, Ellen DeGeneres, has been dogged by tabloid rumors that she and 41-year-old actress Portia De Rossi are headed for a “$220 million divorce.”
DeGeneres, in typical charming fashion, played off the tabloid stories with humor. On one of her TV shows in December, she joked about seeing the story about her divorce rumors on display: “all of a sudden I had noticed [a tabloid] sitting on the counter in front of me, and it caught my eye because Portia and I were in the top right-hand corner. I thought “oh that’s sweet, they’re honoring us.” And then I read the headline underneath and it said ‘Ellen and Portia’s marriage crumbles.’ I was like “oh what happened? They seemed so happy.’” DeGeneres said someone had torn out the article from the magazine, so “I will never know what’s tearing my marriage apart.”
She later affirmed her affection for De Rossi: “I love her so much it kills me.”
The DeGeneres divorce rumor demonstrates how hearsay and gossip can really spiral out of control and lead to confusion, hurt feelings and misunderstandings. If you’re going through a divorce yourself – or if you’re thinking about separating – you may find yourself waging a PR campaign at the same time as you’re fighting for assets, custody, and other important needs.
