How to Reduce Costs Associated with Adoption
Adoption can be an expensive process, however, there are several ways to reduce your costs. Below you will find a list of a few ways to reduce your costs.
Federal Adoption Tax Credit: The government will allow a tax break to cover the adoptive costs for parents. This tax credit will reduce the tax liability of the adopting parents. In 2010, the limit for the credit was about $12,000.00.
Military: If you are actively serving, the military will reimburse you for the cost of your adoption.
South Carolina State Employee: If you are a South Carolina state employee, you are eligible for benefits when adopting a child. After the adoption is finalized, you may take up to 6 weeks sick time to help care for the child. If you are a part of your employer’s insurance program, you may qualify for reimbursement for some of the adoption costs.
Monthly Subsidies: Should you adopt a child with special needs, you may qualify for monthly financial assistance from the state. This is to help cover medical costs that are not already covered by Medacaid.
